Anna varsity urged to de-link affiliated colleges
Chennai: The Federation of Tamil Nadu All University Employee
Association has appealed to the Chief Minister to take steps
to de-link affiliated colleges from Anna University and link
them up with the universities in the respective districts.
By retaining all affiliated colleges with Anna University, the purpose for which the university was created 25 years back — to improve the quality of technical education and research and function as a nodal university for producing quality teaching faculty — as getting diluted. Only by disaffiliating them could the university's functioning be made more effective, the federation said in its letter to the Chief Minister, a copy of which was released here on Wednesday.
Only constituent colleges should remain with the university and it should function as a research centre. Only responsibilities such as framing new syllabus for technical institutions, creating question banks and forming examination guidelines should be vested with it. The respective universities in the districts should be put in charge of conducting examinations and awarding degrees in the various technical institutions. All students studying in engineering colleges in the State should receive the benefit of the syllabus and examination pattern devised by Anna University, the federation added. This would also benefit rural students who now had to come to Chennai for any issues that had to be sorted out in person.
The federation also commended the government for protecting the interests of rural students by scrapping the Common Entrance Test for admission to professional courses.
