Bharathiar University to open regional centre in Madurai

It will be technologically equipped to enable students to learn online
  • To come up opposite district court
  • Video-conferencing will be available
Madurai: A regional centre of Coimbatore-based Bharathiar University will be opened in Madurai by the middle of June for the benefit of students in its distance education stream.

The regional centre, coming up opposite the district court, will be technologically equipped to enable the students to have online learning, video-conferencing and direct interaction with resource persons, according to G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor. He told The Hindu here on Saturday that the proposed centre would cater to needs of candidates who were enrolled at nearly 40 study centres in this region.

“ Students, who do not have a personal computer at home, can come to the regional centre and learn lessons offered through network broadcasting,” he said. The university had allocated Rs. 30 lakh towards establishing technology-oriented learning centres at different places in the State, including Chennai.

The Vice-Chancellor said that the varsity’s distance education wing was taking steps to create facilities for interactive learning through video-conferencing. A digital library would also be there at the regional centres for students to collect lessons in CD format. A one-year ‘Executive MBA’ programme had been launched by the university targeting employees working in Government, quasi-Government undertakings and private companies registered under the Companies Act. Under this programme, an employee’s work experience of three years would be equated with the first year of MBA programme. It would be available both in regular and distance education modes.

“The course has been approved by the AICTE and the Distance Education Council, New Delhi,” he said.

“We have no hesitation to come to the conclusion that Clause IV(a)(iii) of the Annexure to the G.O., which compels the self-financing colleges of education to surrender 50 per cent of their seats as Government quota is clearly ultra vires.”
