Indo-Australian Award for educationist
Chennai: The Indo-Australian Award for Meritorious Service was
conferred posthumously on K.C.G. Verghese,
founder of the Hindustan Group of Engineering Colleges,
by Australian High Commissioner John McCarthy on Tuesday.
The award, comprising a citation and memento, was received by
his wife and Hindustan University chancellor Elizabeth Verghese.
Mrs. Verghese described her husband as an exemplary person and
great visionary who lived ahead of his times. “I am extremely
humbled and honoured to receive this award. I am also following
in his footsteps to fulfil his dreams in the field of education.
I am proud to say that the Hindustan College of Engineering
has been granted university status,” she said.
Giving away the award, Mr. McCarthy said some people lived ahead
of their times, and Verghese was one of them. He pioneered the
open sky policy in India and suggested that pilots undergo training
in Australia.
Rich tributes were paid to Verghese by Anna University Vice-Chancellor
D. Viswanathan, the former Bursar of Madras Christian College,
Robert Guruswamy, and Kodaikanal Christian College chairman
Sam Abraham. He said the award should have been given to Mr.
Verghese 15 years ago, and he followed Mr. Verghese’s
idea to develop Anna University.
