Want to change engg college? Apply before June 15

Chennai: Students studying in engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu who wish to change their institution must apply for a transfer before June 15.

"Applications for transfer submitted after this date will not be entertained. The government had by an order already banned transfer of students from one engineering college to another in the middle of an academic year. Therefore, students who want to quit a college must do so before the commencement of the new academic year 2009-10," an official of the directorate of technical education (DOTE) said.
Students who are studying in self-financing colleges can seek a transfer only into another private college and not government or aided institution. At the same time, they cannot change their branch of study.

To get a transfer, the student must obtain a consent letter from the principal of the college where he/she is studying currently and the institution to which admission is being sought. The transfer will be granted only against vacancies in colleges.

There are several reasons for a student to change the college in which he/she is studying. "There have been instances where students studying in colleges in places away from home have sought transfer to institutions in their home districts on health grounds. In the past, there have been a couple of cases where students of an institution were transferred en masse to other colleges as the institution was either disaffiliated by the Anna University or lacked infrastructure," the official pointed out.

Recently students of a self-financing engineering college near Chennai had demanded that they be transferred to other institutions as the university had issued a show cause notice to the institution for certain lapses.

Application forms for transfer can be obtained from the directorate of technical education in Chennai.
