Work on university campus begins
It is likely to take 12 to 16 months for completion
Ramanathapuram: Construction of the Ramanathapuram campus of Anna University (Tiruchi) has begun at Pullankudi near here.
It would take 12 to 16 months for completion. However, it was decided to complete construction of laboratory building within two months to enable the authorities to shift the second year students (240) to the main campus as early as possible.
T. Sri Renga Raja, Dean, Anna University (Tiruchi), Ramanathapuram campus, and R. Subramania Pillai, Head, Academic, told The Hindu that it would be completed at a cost of Rs.32 crore, of which the State government had released Rs.15 crore.
The estimate included establishment of laboratories and all equipment, hostel, food court and canteen.
The design and structure of the buildings would be similar to the main campus in Tiruchi. It would have separate blocks for administration and classrooms.
The total built up area would be 40,000 sqft. The proposed facilities would take care of the future needs of students’ strength as well.
4 acre for pond
Mr. Pillai said that out of 44-acre of land, around 4 acre would be earmarked for creating a pond.
It would not only take care of the water needs of the campus to a level, but also be helpful to establish a campus farm to grow vegetables needed for the hostels.
The entire activities of the Ramanathapuram campus, which functioned on a rented building, would be shifted to the permanent buildings from the next academic year onwards.
The new campus would have a state-of-art-power house.
