Three more deemed varsity aspirants in TN

Chennai: When it comes to establishing deemed universities nothing seems to be too much for the private players in higher education in Tamil Nadu. The state, which until recently, not only hosted the largest number of deemed to be universities but was also on top of the chart in terms of number of applicants for the coveted status, now has three more aspirants in the fray. This includes an engineering college founded by a trust managed by former state education minister and AIADMK MP M Thambidurai and his family members.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) now has on its hands 42 applications up from 39 earlier from managements of self-financing higher educational institutions seeking to be declared as deemed to be universities under Section 3 of the UGC Act.
"Two of these applications came on the UGC's file in May. The third one, the Adhiyamaan Educational Research Institution (Adhiyamaan College of Engineering) in Hosur, managed by an educational trust floated by Thambidurai, was taken on file earlier this month," a source said. Interestingly, another educational trust floated by Thambidurai and his associates already owns a deemed university the St Peter's University in Chennai.

"This year alone the UGC has taken on file applications from the managements of seven colleges who are seeking to convert their institutions into deemed universities. Last year, 12 fresh applications for deemed university status were received by the UGC," the source added.

The latest applicants other than Adhiyamaan College of Engineering are the AVC Institute of Science and Technology (currently AVC College of Engineering) in Mayiladuthurai in Nagapattinam district and the Vivekanandha University (Vivekanandha College of Arts and Sciences for Women) in Tiruchengode in Namakkal district.

While the UGC has kept the application of the Adhiyamaan College in the Pending' category, it had last month directed the management of the AVC College of Engineering to rectify certain deficiencies pointed out by it. In the case of the Vivekanandha College of Arts and Science for Women, the UGC has called for information in the prescribed format.

Presently 29 higher educational institutions in Tamil Nadu have been granted the deemed to be university status by the UGC.
