MKU offers M.Sc. course in Computational Biology

Entrance test at seven centres on September 26


Madurai: A new postgraduate course called ‘M.Sc.(Computational Biology) is being offered at the Madurai Kamaraj University with funding support from the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India.

The DBT has initiated this PG course to meet the demand for trained manpower essential for activities related to bioinformatics in the country. On behalf of the participating universities including MKU, a combined entrance test will be conducted on September 26 (Sunday) by the Pondicherry University for admission to this two-year M.Sc. course. The Bioinformatics Centre in each of the universities will be responsible for the conduct of the DBT-funded course. Computational biology is a multi-disciplinary area that involves application of computer science, mathematics and statistics to biological problems.
Candidates must have bachelor's degree in any relevant area of physical/chemical/life sciences/mathematics or computer science with mathematics at Plus Two level and a minimum of 55 per cent marks in undergraduate level.

Application forms can be downloaded from the websites: www.pondiuni.edu.in, www.bicpu.edu.in, www.annauniv.edu, www.mkuniversity.org and www.biotechmku.org.

The filled-in applications should reach on or before September 13 to ‘The Centre Head, Centre for Bioinformatics, Pondicherry University, Puducherry-605 014' along with a Demand Draft for Rs.300 drawn in favour of ‘The Finance Officer, Pondicherry University' payable at Pondicherry. (For SC/ST candidates it is Rs.150 and free of cost for physically/visually challenged candidates along with relevant certificates).

Hall-ticket (page 3 of the application form) can be retained by the candidate and must be produced at the examination centre. The photographs should be attested by the Head of the passed out institution or any gazetted officer of Central or State Government.

The entrance test, which would be of two-hour duration, will be conducted at seven centres: Chennai, Pondicherry, Madurai, New Delhi, Pune, Kolkata and Hyderabad. If there are not enough applicants choosing any of the centres, the candidate will be allotted another nearest centre.

The question paper consists of 100 multiple choice questions in physics, chemistry, mathematics, life sciences, computer science and statistics. Negative marking will be applicable. Candidates will be admitted for this M.Sc. course as per the merit list of the entrance test. The reservation norms of Government of India would be followed.

Results of the entrance test will be declared on October 5 and classes for M.Sc. (Computational Biology) would begin on October 15.
