" Varsity clears decks for new college at Arantangi "

To be the fourth constituent unit of Bharathidasan University
  • To function temporarily from the premises of government polytechnic at Arantangi
  • Three other colleges are in Perambalur, Orathanad and Lalgudi
Tiruchi: Bharathidasan University has cleared the decks for starting a new constituent college at Arantangi in Pudukottai district during this academic year.

The college would function temporarily from a few buildings on the premises of Government Polytechnic in Arantangi, offering three programmes: B.A. English Literature, B.Com and B.Sc. Computer Science. Sixty students would be admitted to each programme, the Vice-Chancellor K. Meena said.
Guest faculties have been appointed, Dr. Meena said. The college would provide higher education opportunities to rural students in and around Arantangi. Hitherto, students pursuing higher education had to travel to Pudukkottai.

The new college will be the university's fourth constituent unit. The three other colleges are in Perambalur, Orathanad and Lalgudi.

The ones in Perambalur and Orthanad that were started in 2006 have now been shifted to permanent campuses.

For the Dr. Kalaignar College of Arts and Science that was started in Lalgudi in 2008, the university readied the building plan for the permanent campus on a 12-acre site in 2009.

These constituent colleges have come up owing to public initiatives, particularly the efforts of elected representatives in the respective constituencies.

The constituent colleges in Perambalur and Thanjavur were established owing to the interest evinced by Central ministers A. Raja and S.S. Palanimanickam respectively. The Government sanctioned a number of permanent teaching posts subsequently.

Likewise, the State Transport Minister K.N. Nehru mobilised public support for starting the Dr. Kalaignar College of Arts and Science in his hometown and made a contribution of Rs.1.1 crore. Patronage for the college has been quite encouraging, university sources said.

As per the government norms, universities can start constituent arts and science colleges in places where the local public mobilises one crore rupees that would constitute one-fourth of the total project cost.

As for the new constituent college in Arantangi, the initiative was spearheaded by the constituency MLA Udayam Shanmugam.

The procedures for establishing the new college was promptly initiated by the university within days of receiving the Government Order.
