Dr. MGR Educational and Research
Institute, a Deemed University (hereafter-called Dr. MGR Deemed
University) was established in the year 2003 as per Ministry of Human
Resource Development, Government of India Notification No.F.9-1/2002-U.3
dated 21.01.2003 and University Grants Commission (UGC) Notification
F.6.6/2002(CPP-I) dated 13.03.03 to provide Higher Education in Engineering,
Technology, Medicine and Dentistry, Humanities and Sciences to meet
the current and projected need of the society. Besides promoting research
and dissemination of knowledge, the University fosters co-operation
between academic, industrial and medical communities he world over,
with special focus on innovation, creative product design and high quality
service through various extension activities and application -oriented
educational programmes in emerging areas, which are relevant and useful
to various developmental sectors and to the society in general.
University Governance: The University was established by its
Founder -Trustee Thiru. A.C Shanmugam, BA, BL, Ex MLA, Ex MP
on 28.03.2002 as an Educational Trust in the name of Dr. MGR Educational
and Research Institute located at Maduravoyal, Chennai, mainly with
an aim to promote higher levels of learning and develop professional
competence through education and research in Engineering, Technology,
Science, Medicine and Dentistry and Humanities.
University Objectives: This University aims to promote higher levels
of learning and professional competence by establishing centers of excellence,
to inculcate discipline and ethical standards, and to channelize opportunities
for self-employment through innovative research, for the welfare of
people and growth of the Indian economy.

Research: All the department of Engineering, Technology, Science, Medicine and
Dentistry have established facilities and sophisticated equipment
for pursuing research work leading to M.S. or Ph.D. degree.
M.S. program is by research with duration of three years and Ph.D.
program is for a minimum period of three years with one year of course
study.
Libraries: The University has two Central Libraries with 50,000 volumes of books
and 1000 journals, CDs and Videos on various disciplines of Engineering,
Technology, Science, English, and Medicine. The Libraries are taken
care by 6 librarians and 10 assistants.
Hostels:
Hostel facilities are available for boys and girls separately in the
University campus. The rooms are spacious and well furnished with
dining halls for vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

The successful professional education depends on very close kint and interaction
of the institution with industries for curriculum design, training,
placement, research, development and project work. R&D activities
at industries shape the progress of the industries and the economy
of nation as a whole. The institution's involvement with industrial
